STARKVILLE RECYCLING PROGRAM

The Starkville Recycling Program is a cooperative effort by the City of Starkville and Community Recycling Services (CRS). The city provides 24 hours/seven days a week collection services through 3 drop-off sites located in Starkville. The collection containers are owned and serviced by the city. The Starkville Department of Sanitation delivers the recycled materials from these sites to CRS.

CRS is our materials-recovery facility located on Collier Road in Starkville. CRS is a private, non-profit recycling company that is a division of Community Counseling Services (CCS), Mississippi's Regional Mental Health/Mental Retardation Commission for the 7 counties surrounding Starkville. CCS formed the recycling center from an existing employment/vocational training program for adults with disabilities. CRS processes the recycled materials and prepares them for shipment. CRS applies the unique skills of their clients to real world jobs in the recycling plant.

Recycling is only one part of a three-part strategy in the recycling loop.

The other two parts are "reduce" and "reuse." These two strategies are actually more effective than the "recycle" component alone. Consider, before each purchase, creative ways you can reduce your need for the product. Also consider the package that it comes in. Is it "Earth friendly"? Can it be recycled in our community? At every opportunity, buy products made from "post-consumer" recycled materials (% content will be listed on the package). This is the most crucial aspect in closing the recycling loop. If there is not a demand for products made from or packaged in recycled materials, then the collection process is irrelevant.

Please prepare your recyclables properly.
Placing items in the recycling collection containers that are dirty or not accepted by CRS increases the work load and cost of operating our recycling center. Let's do our part to ensure that our program is successful!

It takes less than 15 minutes per week to prepare your recyclables properly!

WHAT AND HOW TO RECYCLE

Each drop-off site has one container each for Newspaper, Cardboard, and Aluminum Cans. White office paper (computer or copy machine paper) is accepted at CRS during business hours.

NEWSPAPER:
Must be clean, dry, and unbound. No bags or string; take these home with you for reuse. Inserts that come with the newspaper are acceptable. Please do not add junk mail, catalogs, telephone books, or any other type of paper.

By recycling 1 ton of paper, we save: 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, and enough energy to heat an average home for 6 months!

CARDBOARD:
Only clean, dry corrugated cardboard, please. This is the cardboard with 3 layers, 2 smooth outside layers with a honeycomb or wavy layer in the middle. Colored boxes are acceptable but no wax-coated boxes (usually used for produce or frozen foods). No cereal boxes. Remove all packing materials and flatten all boxes to save space in the collection containers. Shipping labels and some packaging tape are acceptable, but no duct tape.

ALUMINUM CANS:
Please rinse cans well. Do not place any metals or other items inside of the cans. Steel (tin) cans are not accepted by CRS at this time. If you are unsure if your can is aluminum, place a magnet on it. If the magnet sticks, it is not aluminum. Magnets do not stick to aluminum cans.

Recycling aluminum cans saves 95% of the energy required to make aluminum cans from scratch!

WHITE OFFICE PAPER:
White office paper is accepted only at CRS. There are no collection containers at the drop-off sites for office paper. Ink may be colored but the paper must be white. No glossy, colored, waxed, or soiled paper accepted. No carbon paper.

PLASTICS:
Due to the intense labor requirements for processing plastics, plastics are not being accepted by CRS at this time. An alternative plastics recycling program is being explored. Please watch for updates to be posted in late May or early June on the information signs located at each drop-off site. The Columbus/Lowndes Recycling Center will accept plastics until an alternative program is established in Starkville.

Directions to Columbus/Lowndes Recycling Drop-off Center:
Take Hwy. 82 East from Starkville. Take the Main Street/Downtown exit and follow ramp to the right. Get into left lane onto Hwy. 182 East/69 South. Harveys Restaurant will be on your right. Stay on Hwy. 182 East/69 South for 1.7 miles from Harveys (through 9 traffic lights). Take a right at SDR MLK Jr. Dr. (no visible street sign here) right after the Walco gas station and just before Dill and Norris Restaurant Supply. Take this road for 0.4 miles (will go through one red light). The recycling center will be on your left. For more information, contact the Columbus Chamber of Commerce at 662-328-4491 or Deborah Hester at 662-386-3146.

Drop-off hours: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. M-F

Manufacturers can make one extra-large T-shirt out of only five recycled plastic soda bottles, and a pair of blue jeans out of only two recycled plastic soda bottles blended with cotton!
