Starkville
is fortunate to have a cost of living that allows a homeowner to
get more house for the dollar than in most of the United States.
Both new and pre-owned homes are available in a number of styles,
from preserved Victorian homes merely a century old to modern, spacious
designs. The university, along with the continued prosperity of
the city's businesses and industries insures that a readily available
housing supply is maintained - with homes in all price ranges -
throughout the city. Prices for both new and previously-owned houses
range from $50,000 to $500,000.
Rental properties
are also available. The average rental for a three bedroom house
is $475 to $600 per month. There are over 30 apartment complexes
in the area. For senior citizens, there is a retirement community
home (Boardtown Village) as well as a fully-licensed health care
center.
During calendar
year 2001, 72 single family homes were constructed at an average
construction cost of $104,194. Over the last five years 456 single
family residences were built, or 7.6 per month. From January 1999
through December 2001, 39 multi-family homes with 878 apartment
units were built within the City of Starkville. The trend continues
as evidenced by steady increases in the dollar value of building
permits issued.
