Starkville Recycling FAQs
Here’s great news for recycling fans: Starkville residents now have access to drop-off recycling services as part of the city’s Think Green program. Reintroducing residential recycling services is part of the city’s long-range commitment to create more opportunities to reduce Starkville’s carbon footprint through multiple sustainability programs.
Why Should I Recycle?
Other than the good feeling you get from doing it, there are many reasons to recycle. Recycling saves landfill space, conserves resources, save energy and water. Plus, it’s an investment in the future that will help protect the environment for our children and grandchildren. If we do our part, we can contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment for generations to come.
What items can I recycle?
Think Green accepts two types of recyclable materials: Cardboard and paper, and tin and aluminum cans. For now, plastics will not be accepted due to prohibitive collection costs and the limited local market for recyclable plastics; nor will glass because of the heightened potential for injuries and equipment damage from breakage.
Where is the recycling drop-off location?
Residents can bring their recyclables to the new Think Green site located at the Starkville Sanitation & Environmental Services Department at 506 Dr. Douglas L. Conner Drive.
When can I drop-off my recyclables?
Residents can deposit recyclables in the appropriate containers at the drop-off site during Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Does Think Green provide for recyclable pick up at my home?
Not at this time. The City scaled back garbage and recycling collection in response to pandemic-related staffing issues with curbside pick-up, establishing the new drop-off site for recyclables.
How great is the need for a recycling program in Starkville?
Historically, Starkville’s participation rate for recycling has been 10-12%, a relatively low range that makes it difficult to justify large investments for local recycling services. By reintroducing recycling on a smaller, more cost-effective scale, there’s room for growth in the future based on public demand.
Is there a charge for recycling?
With a focus on financial sustainability, the city designed a recycling program that provides access to basic services at no charge for participants. Think Green will cost $1,300 a month, or around $11,000 for the remainder of 2021, the majority of which will cover hauling fees and overtime pay for Saturday staffing.
Who manages Starkville's recycling program?
The City is contracting with Waste Pro of Lowndes County to establish the collection site and haul recyclables.
